We are excited to announce the upcoming Religion and Spirituality in Healthcare Conference, a unique gathering dedicated to expanding the scope of spiritual care research in South African healthcare. This conference is presented by HospiVision in collaboration with the Department of Practical Theology, University of Pretoria and is made possible through the support of Grant 63219 from the John Templeton Foundation..
Conference Overview
Spirituality has always played a crucial role in healthcare, yet its integration into modern medical practice has significantly declined. The Religion and Spirituality in Healthcare Conference aims to restore and strengthen this connection by fostering interdisciplinary research, encouraging collaboration between faith communities and healthcare services, and exploring innovative ways to incorporate spirituality into patient care.
This conference will provide a platform for researchers, healthcare practitioners, theologians, policymakers, and students to engage in meaningful discussions and share cutting-edge research in this vital field.
Conference Schedule
14 October – Research Workshop: Transcending Boundaries in Research
This one-day workshop is designed for academics and scholars interested in interdisciplinary research on religion, spirituality, and healthcare. The workshop will explore multiple methodologies and transdisciplinary research approaches to enhance the quality of scientific studies in this field. Topics include:

A review of current local and international research on spirituality and health.
-
Recommendations for future research in South Africa.
-
Challenges in measuring spirituality and available assessment tools.
15 – 16 October – Conference Presentations: Religion and Spirituality in Healthcare
A two-day session where researchers will present their latest findings on religion and spirituality in healthcare. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with experts, discuss key issues, and gain insights into evidence-based practices.
17 October – Post-Conference Workshop: Holistic Healing: Merging Spiritual Care with Medical Practice
This interactive workshop will focus on translating research findings into practical applications. Discussions will include:
-
How research findings can be implemented in South African hospitals.
-
The challenges of integrating spiritual care into medical practice.
-
Small group discussions on practical solutions for addressing patients’ spiritual needs.
Key Research Questions
The conference will explore several critical questions, including:

How can spiritual and religious interventions complement conventional medical treatment and improve healthcare outcomes?
-
What impact do spiritual and religious beliefs, including harmful religious practices, have on patient experiences and care?
-
How does spiritual education among healthcare professionals influence their approach to patient care?
-
How can interdisciplinary collaboration enhance the integration of spiritual care into healthcare settings?
Who Should Attend?
This conference is open to healthcare practitioners, theologians, researchers, academics, policymakers, and students interested in the intersection of religion and healthcare. Additionally, faith-based organizations, community leaders, and hospital administrators are encouraged to participate.

Join us in shaping the future of spiritual care in South African healthcare!

this initiative resonates deeply. loving the idea of fusing healthcare services with spiritual practices, great concept indeed. would love to sit and have a chat with the person who came up with this initiative, here’s to you 👑💐🤝🏾 would really love to be a part of and get involved in any way i can.
was once diagnosed with a mental condition and was told i will have to live of lifelong meds to avoid a regress. +-9 yrs later i remain a resilient survivor more than ever, with no meds and no relapse. (fyi, meds remain necessary). to me, two things were happening, mental exhaustion and the “shift” were taking place. just couldn’t not make sense of the experience…
fast-forward to date, i have since established a practical methodology through extensive research, self study and lived experience about mental health challenges, substance misuse and identity crisis, which are the core areas that propelled innerwork isometrics, a program i have since founded.
self identity remains crucial specially in this day and age were bullying in schools, substance misuse, gbv, mental health challenges etc, have taken centre stage because once you have discovered who you really are, a lot changes… you develop a new way of being, viewing and experiencing life. interestingly enough, there’s no destination, just constant elevation…
it’s essential for ‘myself’ to return to ‘me’ to remember ‘who i truly am’ beyond titles, beyond trauma, beyond external validation name form and attachments. for within ‘me’ lies the knowing awareness pathway to self, ‘the i am that, i am’. hence "no man can come to the father except through ‘me’, the ‘me’ we all refer to.
the program has been welcomed by many and has since been yielding impactful results in the lives of many. it is this knowledge and more i am willing to share with the organization, patients and the collective at large. i am contactable at 069 1869 369 for further enqiries or bookings.🤝🏾

This is an important and timely initiative. As an Indigenous Health Scientist and Traditional Health Practitioner, I particularly appreciate the conference’s willingness to engage the intersection between spirituality, healthcare, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the South African context.
Too often, conversations on spirituality in healthcare remain narrowly confined to psychosocial or pastoral frameworks without adequately engaging Indigenous Health Knowledge Systems, ancestral epistemologies, community healing systems, and spiritually mediated models of care that continue to shape the lived healthcare realities of millions across Africa.
I look forward to the possibility of contributing to the growing discourse on spiritual governance, epistemic inclusion, culturally responsive healthcare systems, and ethical interdisciplinary engagement between biomedical systems and Indigenous healing traditions. South Africa’s evolving healthcare landscape requires courageous, intellectually honest, and transdisciplinary conversations such as these.
Congratulations to Hospivision NPO, the Department of Practical Theology at University of Pretoria, and all collaborators involved in advancing this important platform.
Kindly invite me for this year’s conference
