Karl Bremer Hospital

Karl Bremer Hospital is a regional hospital in Bellville, Cape Town, where HospiVision provides pastoral-spiritual care and counselling services to patients across multiple wards. Our team focuses on holistic support—addressing emotional, spiritual, and practical needs during patients' hospital stays.

Under the coordination of Phakama Magadla, the Karl Bremer team provides compassionate care to patients in the Medical, Medical/Surgical, and other wards. In the third quarter of 2025, the site conducted 505 patient sessions, with peak engagement in the Medical and Medical/Surgical wards.

A key focus at Karl Bremer has been educating staff and patients about HospiVision's role. Early on, both staff and patients sometimes associated "HospiVision" with "hospice" care, leading to the misconception that the organisation only provided end-of-life support.

To address this, our team developed a "Clarity through Communication" initiative, distributing flyers that clearly define our role: "We provide compassionate spiritual care and counselling... not religion-specific." This outreach has helped patients and staff understand the full range of support available to them.

Our volunteers provide emotional support to children in the paediatric wards using play-based techniques. The "Soft Toy Project," made possible through generous donations from Kenridge Church, has had an overwhelming impact—bringing visible joy to children in high-stress hospital environments. Donations of soft toys, blankets, and puzzles help facilitate these sessions, providing comfort and connection during difficult times.
